Encanto Characters
Mirabel Madrigal
Voiced by Stephanie Beatriz(Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Mirabel Madrigal is 15 years old and lacking one of her family’s signature magical gifts, leading her to feel like an outsider within her own brood — but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have anything to offer. Encanto director Jared Bush described Mirabel as “incredibly empathetic,” which is a superpower in and of itself. She learns as the story goes on that her ability to be unapologetically herself is a gift that the rest of her family wishes they’d had too.
Abuela Alma Madrigal
María Cecilia Botero voices the Madrigal family matriarch (and Mirabel’s grandmother), Abuela Alma. She is loving but also quite controlling and protective of her family after losing her husband, Pedro, to marauders who invaded their village, leaving her to raise triplets Bruno, Pepa and Julieta. Abuela has a magical candle that gives everyone in the family their special gifts. She places a lot of pressure on her family to be perfect, but later regrets it, admitting that she simply wanted to protect them —and herself—from experiencing the heartbreaking loss she’d suffered when Pedro died. It’s no coincidence that her name, “Alma,” translates to “soul” in Spanish, as she is the soul and core of the family Madrigal.
Pedro Madrigal
Seen only in flashbacks, Pedro Madrigal is Abuela Alma’s husband. He sacrifices himself to give Alma, their family, and the rest of the villagers time to escape from the pillagers invading. He is featured during the song “Dos Oruguitas.”
Bruno Madrigal
Bruno Madrigal is the exiled Madrigal and Mirabel’s uncle. Graced with the gift of precognition, Bruno (voiced by John Leguizamo) can see the future — but when the family and other villagers didn’t like what he predicted, he was shunned. He’s the subject of the hit tune “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” in which his premonitions are greatly exaggerated to make him seem much scarier and meaner than he actually is. (Spoiler alert!) It is revealed at the end of Encanto that he was living within the casita’s walls the entire time the story takes place and made only the most obvious predictions that everyone took to be much more ominous than intended.
Luisa Madrigal
Luisa Madrigal is Mirabel’s 19-year-old sister, blessed with superhuman strength, inside and out (as evidenced by her crushing boulders and lifting the entire casita). However, underneath her muscles and stoicism is deep insecurity, crippling anxiety and co-dependency on her family: Luisa needs to be needed. She describes her internal struggle to Mirabel in the song “Surface Pressure,” where she admits that she is terrified of letting down her family if she fails to shoulder every burden they place upon her. Jessica Darrow voices Luisa.
Isabela Madrigal
Voiced by Diane Guerrero, Isabela Madrigal is Mirabel’s oldest sister, clocking in at 21. She struggles to maintain what Mirabel calls her “effortlessly perfect” appearance and demeanor at all times. Beautiful, graceful and blessed with a gift of creating flowers out of thin air, Isabela is betrothed to local pretty boy Mariano but admits to Mirabel that she doesn’t actually want to marry him. She finds herself able to create all sorts of different new flora when she lets go of the rest of the Madrigals’ expectations of her and feels free enough to be truly herself.
Dolores Madrigal
Dolores Madrigal (voiced by singer Adassa) is a few months younger than Isabela and is Mirabel’s cousin. She is in love with Mariano, despite his engagement to Isabela. She has the gift of exceptional hearing, — she basically knows everyone’s business because she can hear even the softest whispers. She is aware that Bruno is living within the casita’s walls because she was able to hear him every single day, but she never brought it up to anyone else because she feared his potential reaction. At the end of Encanto, she professes her love for Mariano, who, luckily, loves her right back.
Mariano Guzman
Mariano Guzman, voiced by Colombian pop star Maluma, is the village heartthrob. He is engaged to Isabela until it’s revealed that she doesn’t love him — but Dolores does. He and Isabela split amicably, and he immediately takes up with the smitten Dolores.
Julieta Madrigal
You know how a good comfort food meal can make you feel a lot better after a tough day? Imagine that times about 1,000, and you’ve got Julieta Madrigal’s special gift: Her meals heal! Julieta is Mirabel, Isabela and Luisa’s mother. Angie Cepeda voices Julieta.
Agustín Madrigal
Agustín Madrigal is Julieta’s husband and Mirabel, Isabela and Luisa’s father. Voiced by Wilmer Valderrama, Agustín is sweet-natured and rather accident-prone and clumsy. Because he is married into the family Madrigal, Agustín doesn’t have any special magical gifts.
Pepa Madrigal
Pepa Madrigal (Carolina Gaitán) is Mirabel’s aunt whose special gift is controlling the weather. However, Pepa can be so emotionally volatile that she often causes storms and rain, including a hurricane on her wedding day to Félix. She is Dolores, Camilo and Antonio’s mother.
Félix Madrigal
Félix Madrigal (voiced by Mauro Castillo) doesn’t have any special gifts, as he married into the Madrigal family. Félix is married to the temperamental Pepa, and his fun-loving, easygoing nature balances out her stormier moods. He spends quite a bit of time chasing away Pepa’s storm clouds.
Camilo Madrigal
Camilo Madrigal is 15 years old. He is Mirabel’s cousin and the son of Pepa and Félix. Camilo, voiced by Rhenzy Feliz, has the special gift of shape-shifting. This helps him become a consummate entertainer for the family, though he is struggling to cement and secure his own distinct identity among the Madrigals.
Antonio Madrigal
Ravi Cabot-Conyers voices Antonio Madrigal. On his fifth birthday, Antonio receives the special gift of communicating with animals. He is Pepa and Félix’s youngest child, and he looks up to and admires Mirabel, seeing her as an older sister figure. Next, check out 101 Disney trivia questions and answers for a magical game night!
