Interim Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings is once again sharing hosting duties with Mayim Bialik on the game show after taking some time away, and he couldn’t help but to make a lasting impression during his first show back. While many viewers were happy about Jennings’ return, it was a mildly inappropriate response to a contestant’s correct answer that threw fans into a frenzy after the episode. The joke came during a Double Jeopardy round in the “Active Bible Verses” category. The clue read: “Since no one had done this for 40 years, God told Joshua to get a knife and do this to male Israelites.” Contestant Erica Weiner-Amanchi, a 4th grade teacher from Philadelphia, was the first to buzz in with the correct answer. “What is, circumcise?” she said. Jennings responded with a short yet unexpected quip. “That is correct. A painful $2,000 for you,” he countered as the game competitors cringed and giggled at the host’s pun. At-home viewers were also amused, taking to social media to commend Jennings for thinking on his feet, making a captivating host. “Ken Jennings just made a circumcision joke on Jeopardy!, make him the official host already,” Men’s Health culture editor Evan Romano tweeted. Another fan added they “really enjoy watching Ken Jennings host,” also suggesting a permanent position for the former game show champion. Other Twitter users joined in with similar sentiments, mainly expressing approval for the host, proving the show’s fans must enjoy a little raw humor every now and then (despite how uncomfortable it may seem in the moment). For now, Jennings and Bialik will continue to share hosting duties until the end of season 38 on July 31, with a permanent host expected to be announced soon.
