What is thread count?
Thread count is the number of threads in one square inch of fabric. Most sheets range from 200 thread count on up to 1000. Some luxury bedding can go as high as 1800 thread count. Depending on the fabric and weave, a higher thread count doesn’t always equate to the softest sheets.
Which fabric is the best for bed sheets?
Most sheets are either made from cotton, linen or microfiber (a blend of synthetic fibers). Microfiber can feel silky soft and smooth at a fraction of the cost of actual silk sheets. In recent years, bamboo has also become a source for fabrics.
What should I look for in quality bed sheets?
Along with material and thread count, you should also consider weave, fiber length and ply, fit and of course, color. Weave refers to how cotton is woven. For example, percale sheets are crisp with a matte finish while sateen sheets have a silk-like luminous finish. Ply refers to how many strands are woven together to make a thread. Single-ply threads are actually softer and more durable than multi-ply. Quality luxury bed sheets usually contain staples, or longer fibers, which creates a softer, more durable fabric. Look for “long staple cotton” in your luxe bed sheets. While most sheets come in the standard sizes like Twin, Queen, King and California King, you should also consider depth, especially if you have a pillow top mattress or other modifications to your mattress which might require a deeper pocket.
