“There are people who are craving to be heard and to be seen, and to have their humanity recognized, and we had the opportunity to send that message loud and clear on a very important street in our city,” Mayor Bowser said at a press conference (via NBC News). “And it is that message, and that message is to the American people, that Black Lives Matter black humanity matters, and we as a city raise that up as part of our values as a city.” But the art doesn’t end there. Artists all over the world are picking up their spray paint cans to express their feelings about the recent killings of unarmed black people. From Minneapolis to Berlin to Cincinnati, walls and streets have been covered in graffiti and murals dedicated to the Black Lives Matter movement. Aside from “Black Lives Matter,” artists have also been remembering Floyd with street art and some of his final words that have reverberated around the world: “I can’t breathe.” In Berlin Germany, graffiti artist Eme Freethinker painted a George Floyd mural on the Berlin Wall, on one of the last remaining sections of the landmark.
