Enjoyed by millions every day, the humble margarita has become one of the most popular cocktails in the nation. Can you believe this cocktail even has its own holiday? Tequila fans have come up with tons of unique takes on margaritas, but every day is a good day for margs if you ask us—not just Margarita Day.

History of the margarita

Simply superb, the very popular margarita was originally thought to be a twist on a Sidecar cocktail. Tequila replaced the brandy, lime juice stood in for lemon, and a salt rim finished the cocktail instead of a sugar one. In another version, in 1948, Dallas socialite Margaret Sames had invited friends from Dallas to visit her in Acapulco, Mexico. While preparing for her visitors, Margaret began experimenting with a tequila cocktail to serve poolside. Having tried and enjoyed Cointreau, she decided to pair the two. Tequila, Cointreau, fresh lime juice and a salted rim: the margarita was born. One famous party guest, hotelier Nicky Hilton, went on to feature the margarita at his Acapulco Hilton, popularizing the drink. Thus the mighty margarita began a reign of its own, with many varieties being just as popular as the original! You can enjoy frozen margaritas, margaritas made into martinis, hot, spicy, and even sweet margs.
