“Even if makeup has an SPF label on the bottle, it is not enough to protect yourself,” says Dr. Zeichner. “To get the level of protection you need to apply enough of the product you need about a quarter-sized dollop to deposit enough sunscreen. Applying that much makeup would leave the face looking caked-on, so most people are not using that much.” Since you’re likely not using that much SPF-infused makeup, what you’re applying has diluted SPF. “Plus, makeup is not being applied to all the areas that need protection, like the ears, neck, hairline, and around the jaw,” says Dr. Zeichner. So you should be applying sunscreen before you put your makeup on.“Your best bet is to apply your sunscreen first, either a straight sunscreen or a moisturizer with SPF, then apply sunscreen over it,” says Dr. Zeichner. But not all sunscreens are good options for being worn under your makeup. According to Dr. Zeichner, here are the five best sunscreens to wear under makeup. 5 Best Sunscreens to Wear Under Makeup
Solara Suncare Time Traveler
“This all-natural sunscreen uses mineral-only protection with zinc oxide and rubs in without weighing the skin down or leaving a white cast behind. Ceramides and squalene help repair and protect the skin barrier,” says Dr. Zeichner. Check out Solara Suncare Time Traveler here.
Bliss Block Star Invisible Daily Sunscreen
“This mineral sunscreen has a slight tint that blends invisibly into the skin,” says Dr. Zeichner. “Besides zinc oxide mineral protection against UV light, iron oxide pigments protect against visible light. The formula is ultra-light and full rubs into the skin.” Check out Bliss Block Star Invisible Daily Sunscreen here.
RoC MULTI CORREXION® 5 In 1 Daily Moisturizer With Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30
“This light moisturizer hydrates the skin without leaving you feeling greasy,” says Dr. Zeichner. “The formula gives broad-spectrum UV protection along with an antioxidant complex to neutralize free radical damage, brighten the complexion, and strengthen the skin.” Check out RoC MULTI CORREXION® 5 In 1 Daily Moisturizer With Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 here.
Mele NO SHADE Sunscreen Oil SPF 30 Broad Spectrum
“Designed specifically for patients with darker skin tones, the lightweight oil is sheer and fast-absorbing to offer both hydration and UV protecting benefits,” says Dr. Zeichner. check out Mele NO SHADE Sunscreen Oil SPF 30 Broad Spectrum here.
Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40
“The slick consistency of this sunscreen makes it a great option to wear under makeup because it acts like a primer to absorb oil and provide mattifying benefits,” says Dr. Zeichner. Check out Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 here. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that sunscreen isn’t a “set it and forget it” kind of thing—you need to reapply every two hours, or immediately after heavy sweating or swimming. “Reapplication is a challenge when it comes to makeup because you don’t want to redo the makeup you already spent time applying that morning,” says Dr. Zeichner. “I recommend powder sunscreens or SPF setting sprays as a solution.” Next up, does sunscreen expire? here’s everything you need to know.
