Luxury resort Soneva Fushi, located on the island of Kunfunadhoo in the Baa Atoll—one of the Maldives’ largest islands—is seeking the newest “barefoot bookseller” to come manage what was once a simple pop-up book shop at the island getaway. And yes, they really mean barefoot; shoes are all but banned from the island. “The ethos of the island is: no shoes, no news. They encourage guests to reconnect with the ground,” Alex McQueen, the spokesperson for Ultimate Library, which runs the bookshop in partnership with the resort, told The Guardian. The placement starts in October 2022 and runs for a full year. According to the outlet, accommodation for one is provided free of charge, as are all meals. The bookseller will also have access to the gym, spa, and watersports, as well as a private staff beach. The final candidate will also receive $750 a month, with the potential for additional earnings based on offering extra perks, like workshops or classes, to guests. Candidates must be fluent in English, be passionate about classical and modern novels, have social media and blog/newsletter experience, as well as bookselling or publishing experience. Responsibilities will include sales management, physical restocking and inventory management, hosting literature-themed events for resort guests, social media management, newsletter blasts, and more. It’s a competitive position, and they’ve already announced an early application closing date of August 8, 2022, so if this sounds like the role for you, don’t waste any time! Apply today.
