The Shape of Water writer shared a behind-the-scenes sneak peek of his upcoming film, releasing on Netflix this December, at the streamer’s Saturday, Sept. 4 Tudum fan event, and the intricate production of the part-stop-motion, part-CGI film looks incredible. The two minute feature expertly flashes between shots that show the puppeteers at work on set in comparison with the final product, proving movie magic is real. del Toro himself spoke about the process that was showing on screen, proudly introducing, “This is my Pinocchio.” Sped up footage showed crew members building a platform which would hold part of the set as the director continued, “To me, there’s a valuable difference between stop-motion as an art form, and digital.” He explained how the “imperfection” of early stop-motion was what made it so special. “And I really wanted this movie to land in a way that had the expressiveness and the material nature of a handmade piece of animation, an artisanal, beautiful exercise in carving, painting, sculpting, but it had the sophistication of movement that research on rigs and puppetry-making have taken us to.” It’s an amazing look at the minute, even tedious processes of an art form rarely seen these days, not to mention completely enamoring to hear del Toro speak so pridefully about the project. He went on to show off one of the four different sized puppets they used to get all of the shots they needed—a very large Pinocchio used to get the close-ups with the cricket—as well as a Pinocchio that was about the size of the end of his finger, which he giggled in delight over. “Pinocchio is a tale that has lived through the centuries,” he continued, “a fable very close to my heart, and we are very sure that this incarnation is a particularly beautiful one.” With passion like that, we have no doubt.
