With fans of Starz’s time-traveling romance once again dealing with the infamous lag between seasons affectionately known as Droughtlander, it makes sense to begin wondering what’s next for this epic story. Will there be more Outlander in our future or is the end of the line for Claire and Jamie? How many more seasons will we get? How will it end? Well, we have all those answers and more below. (Spoiler: There’s good news and bad news! Isn’t that the Outlander way?) Keep reading for what we know about how (and when) Outlander will end.
Is Outlander ending?
Starz has already renewed Outlander for Season 7. In fact, we’ve already gotten some photos of the cast—including Balfe, Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin—on set filming the new episodes, thanks to the official Starz Instagram account. Details on what Season 7 will entail are, as ever, under wraps, but if the season is based on the seventh novel in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, An Echo in the Bone, then we have some idea of where Jamie and Claire’s adventure may take them next. Here’s a description of book 7 from Gabaldon’s website (spoilers below!): “Jamie and Claire Fraser, are now in the midst of the American Revolution; Their daughter Brianna, her husband Roger MacKenzie, and their two children settled at Lallybroch in the 1970′s (finding their feet after their return from the past—but are unaware that that past is just about to leap out at them again); Lord John Grey and his stepson William (Jamie’s unacknowledged illegitimate son), are embroiled in the Revolution on the British side with William in the army and Lord John on the clandestine side of intelligence; and Jamie’s nephew Young Ian: his troubled love-life is about to take another sharp left turn.” That’s a lot of family drama to dive into over the course of the 16 episodes planned for Season 7. What the series decides to actually take on, we’ll have to wait and see when the new episodes premiere. No official date has been given yet, but expect our next Droughtlander to last until some time in 2023.
Is Outlander ending after Season 7?
The powers that be at Starz have yet to announce anything past a Season 7 renewal, but that doesn’t mean fans should worry just yet about Season 7 being the last chapter in Claire and Jamie’s journey. For one, Gabaldon is still churning out Outlander novels, which means there’s plenty of story to pull from. The series has yet to touch on the events that occur in Gabaldon’s eighth Outlander novel, Written in My Own Heart’s Blood; meanwhile, the ninth novel, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, was just released in 2021 and the tenth book is currently in the works. We do know for sure that the creative team behind the series is ready and eager to keep the series going. Maril Davis, one of Outlander’s executive producers, noted in an exclusive interview with Parade that she’d “love a Season 8,” and that they’re “all ready to do it if we get the go-ahead.” But on top of that, Davis expressed that she’d “love to see it through to the end,” hinting that if Starz wants to go even beyond a Season 8 and follow the novels until they wrap up, that’s not out of the question for those making the series.
How did the Outlander series end?
Well, the good news is that the Starz series hasn’t ended—yet. According to Gabaldon’s website, however, she mentions that book 10 (which doesn’t have a title yet) was originally supposed to be the final chapter in Claire and Jamie’s story. But that decision still may be up in the air: “Book Ten might be the last of my Outlander novels which feature Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser. Or it may not! I don’t know yet, but will be sure to let you know when I do.” She further teased in an interview, “It depends on Jamie and Claire. If they’re not ready to die yet, I guess I will have to go on.” So, we don’t know for sure if book ten spells the end of the story, but until then book readers do know what’s left for the show to explore, should it follow Gabaldon’s novels. We won’t give it all away here, but for a (very spoiler-y) tease, we’ll let you in on a few book secrets: Jamie and Claire head over to Scotland again and make separate, arduous journeys back to Fraser’s Ridge, Brianna and Roger and their kids will time travel back to their present, but will eventually reunite with Claire and Jamie, there’s some interesting Claire and Lord John Grey drama that awaits, and Jamie’s son William will play a larger part in the whole story. Plus that whole Revolutionary War thing happens. For more details on book 9, head over here and you can find some excerpts and teases from the still-in-progress book 10 here, if that doesn’t satisfy your craving.
Does Jamie go to the future in Outlander?
Never say never when dealing with a series about a World War II nurse who travels to 18th-century Scotland and falls for a hunky redhead, but it doesn’t seem likely that Jamie will be time-traveling as Outlander marches forward. Both the books and show have made it clear that the ability to time travel is a genetic trait, one that Jamie doesn’t share (he doesn’t hear the buzzing of the stones, Otter Tooth’s stone doesn’t feel hot to the touch, etc).
