“It’s a big world out there, filled with people who just don’t see eye-to-eye,” the six-time Daytime Emmy Award winner says in a statement, adding that he has “no law degree, and I am way too fly to wear a robe… This is where common sense presides in my house.” Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about ABC’s new courtroom comedy series, Judge Steve Harvey.
Is Steve Harvey a real judge?
He isn’t, but apparently, those plaintiffs and defendants who choose to participate on Judge Steve Harvey aren’t screaming “objection” over his lack of law degree. In fact, it could be to their financial advantage to let Harvey litigate their disputes rather than a real judge. Why? As noted by Distractify, the show’s casting website states that “all awards/judgments are paid by production.” So if Harvey decides you’re due monetary compensation, you’re definitely gonna get it! (That also probably means that guests on the show sign a contract agreeing to abide by Harvey’s rulings, whatever they may be, just as they would if he were a “real” judge.) Harvey also told TV Line, “Most judges are interested in the law: These are the facts, and that’s it. I’m going to dig up the story behind why people came to court vs. what they’re in court for,” he explains. “I lean on decades of experience dealing with all types of situations and people, and I rely on my street-savvy, common sense and humor to get it done.”
Is there a trailer for ABC’s Judge Steve Harvey?"
“All rise! For the honorable Judge Steve Harveyyyyyyy!” That’s how Judge Steve Harvey’s minute-long trailer opens, and the energy stays just as high throughout the preview as Harvey flashes that million-dollar smile of his—and delivers his deadpan putdowns. “In my courtroom, I speak the truth,” Harvey also declares in the clip. “I gotta feeling I’m about to hear a whole lot of nonsense, though.” It seems he’ll sometimes have a hard time maintaining control of his courtroom, as well as his own composure; at one point, he instructs the live audience to “stop laughing!"—but then immediately starts cracking up himself.
What is Judge Steve Harvey about?
In this unscripted courtroom comedy that’s equal parts comical and dramatic, cases are presented to Harvey and he decides on them. The first few cases include a battle between feuding neighbors over fallen trees (dating back to 2017!) and a woman who claims her sister used $6,000 she was given for their brother’s funeral on liposuction and a butt lift. As Harvey exclusively told Parade.com, the show is the result of a great conversation with ABC executives in which they asked Harvey what project he would be attracted to. “I said, ‘Well, the only thing I really ever thought about doing was a judge show,’” he exclusively told Parade.com. “They were intrigued and I tossed them the idea that I had come up with maybe 10 years ago or longer… My team didn’t know anything about the idea, so when I pitched it, and they heard the idea for the first time they were surprised and excited. ABC called me back the next day and said they wanted to do it. So, that’s really how it was born.” He added in a statement that “viewers tuning into Judge Steve Harvey will watch as I tackle tough and, at times, entertaining issues while also providing much-needed advice and good old-fashioned common sense to the litigants in my court.”
