“This has been an experience of a lifetime!” said Sandhu, whose platform is menstrual equity through public administration. “The past three weeks have been a dream getting to know these exceptional women, and I’m honored to be chosen among them to represent this inspiring organization. I hope to serve the global community to the best of my ability in the year to come.” Sandhu, who will relocate to New York City after the first of the year to begin her reign, was crowned by outgoing Miss Universe Andrea Meza (Miss Mexico), who only held the title for seven months, instead of an entire year, as her competition was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s competition featured a swimsuit and evening gown segment, as well as an interview portion for each of the contestants. The new Miss Universe credits her mother, who broke generations of patriarchy to become a successful gynecologist, for inspiring her to follow her own dreams. Working with her mother at health camps where she helped to educate women about their health and menstrual hygiene is how she developed her passion for her platform. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Public Administration. In addition, Sandhu is also an actress and enjoys yoga, dancing, cooking, horse riding and playing chess in her free time. The Miss Universe pageant was held at the Universe Arena at the Port of Eilat in Eilat, Israel, and hosted by Steve Harvey, who returned after a brief hiatus, last hosting in 2019. The selection committee members for the 70th annual show included: international super model, actress and businesswoman Adriana Lima; model, television host and Miss Universe 2016 Iris Mittenaere; beauty entrepreneur and model Lori Harvey; Bollywood actress Urvashi Rautela; Filipino actress Marian Rivera; actress, author, TV host & Telemundo star Adamari Lopez; and The Bold and the Beautiful actress Rena Sofer.
