After making her debut in Season 3, Colman reprised her role as Queen Elizabeth II in Season 4. Following her 2020 Golden Globe win for her portrayal of the monarch, Colman told reporters that playing the royal was hard “because everyone knows who [Queen Elizabeth] is and what she looks like. It’s harder than playing someone who’s imaginary.”
Who played Princess Diana in The Crown Season 4?
Emma Corrin played Diana Spencer. It was announced back in April, 2019 that newcomer Corrin would be stepping into the late Princess’ shoes, portraying Lady Diana Spencer in Season 4 of The Crown. At the time, Corrin expressed her excitement over the casting news, admitting that she was a longtime fan of the show. “I have been glued to the show since the first episode and to think I’m now joining this incredibly talented acting family is just surreal,” she said. “Princess Diana was an icon, and her effect on the world remains profound and inspiring. The Diana years are upon us in the new season of The Crown. “As the 1970s are drawing to a close, Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) and her family find themselves preoccupied with safeguarding the line of succession by securing an appropriate bride for Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor), who is still unmarried at 30,” Netflix said of the season. “While Charles’ romance with a young Lady Diana Spencer (Emma Corrin) provides a much-needed fairytale to unite the British people, behind closed doors, the Royal family is becoming increasingly divided.”
Princess Diana
Royal wedding bells were ringing in Season 4. The teaser trailer showed Diana in her famous wedding gown for her and Charles’ 1981 nuptials. Season 4 of The Crown also recreated a number of royal trips, including Diana and Charles’ 1983 royal tour of Australia. Corrin was photographed in 2019 channeling the Princess of Wales’ look from her visit to Australia’s Ayers Rock. Another memorable royal moment that was replicated was Princess Diana’s 1986 flight on the Concorde.
Prince Charles
Speaking to Town & Country in 2019, O’Connor revealed that viewers would see a “different side” to Charles. “I don’t want to give anything away, but I’ll say that hopefully, people will feel sorry for Charles in season three, and then, maybe, we’ll change that in season four,” he shared. “Certainly, it feels like there’s a definite shift being told in season three. And all across four, there’s definitely a different side to Charles that we’re going to see.”
Prince William and maybe Prince Harry
One year after Charles and Diana’s wedding, the couple welcomed their first child, Prince William in 1982. O’Connor and Corrin, sporting a baby bump, were pictured on set filming with a child actor playing William.
Queen Elizabeth
Queen Elizabeth’s scary security breach was also be depicted. Photos previously shared by the Daily Mail showed Tom Brooke playing Buckingham Palace’s famous intruder Michael Fagan. Fagan broke into the palace in 1982 and entered the Queen’s bedroom, while she was in it.
Margaret Thatcher
Margaret Thatcher, who became prime minister in 1979, made her first appearance in Season 4.

Fans of the show can look forward to two more seasons after Season 4. The series was originally set to wrap after Season 5, however creator Morgan announced in 2020 that The Crown would be extended an additional season.
