“Conversations are underway on both Season 7 and spinoffs,” Moore told The Hollywood Reporter. “I think we will have good news on both those fronts before too long, so I feel optimistic about it. I agree that it should have happened before this, but everything happens in its time and I think that both of those things are probably going to happen and, hopefully, we will be able to say something about it before too long.” The spinoff is something that has been in the works for a while. Back in January 2020, Jeffrey Hirsch, president and CEO, Starz, told Deadline, “We think there’s a lot of opportunity in the Outlander universe to have story extensions, spin-offs or sequels, we continue to look at that and talk with our partners at Sony. Hopefully, we’ll find something that feels great and that we can continue to tell that story.” So, what might this spinoff be about? Here are some possibilities.
An Outlander spinoff about Lord John Grey
The most obvious spinoff would be the character of Lord John Grey. Both Lord John and David Berry are extremely popular with Outlander fans. Plus it’s an existing entity in that bestselling author Diana Gabaldon has already crafted a series of novellas–at least a half dozen–featuring Lord John. In The Scottish Prisoner, in particular, Lord John seeks out Jamie’s assistance in investigating a conspiracy. So if Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie, were available and interested, it might be a great way to kick off the spinoff.
An Outlander spinoff about Jamie’s parents
But that isn’t the only possibility. Gabaldon is working on a prequel to Outlander based on the lives of Jamie’s parents Ellen and Brian Fraser. She revealed this on Twitter in response to a fan question: “Have you ever thought of writing a prequel to Outlander about Jamie’s parents? His mom Ellen sounds like quite a gal. Murtagh loved her (boar tusk bracelets) & MacRannoch also loved her (pearls) & his parents’ love sounds very intense like J&C.” To which, Gabaldon responded: “Yes, it’s in progress.”
An Outlander spinoff about Master Raymond
But that is not the only spinoff in the works. Fans of both the books and the series will recall Master Raymond (Dominique Pinon) from Season 2 during the period of time when Jamie and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) were in Paris. Master Raymond ran the apothecary shop. Fans of the books know there is more to the story than was told in Dragonfly in Amber. This is a spoiler alert for fans of the TV series, but it turns out that Master Raymond is also a time traveler, who is more closely related to Claire than one might think, and could pop up any time. But we will say no more for now.
An Outlander spinoff about Young Ian
In addition to those possibilities and with pure speculation, Starz could go in a completely different direction and visit the time that Young Ian (John Bell) spent with the Mohawk. We know that he had a great love with one of the women of the tribe, who became his wife, and only left because the two couldn’t have children together. Every child they conceived was either stillborn or miscarried.
An Outlander spinoff about Jocasta
And yet another alternative is Jocasta (Maria Doyle Kennedy). She’s had an astonishing life: four husbands, the move from Scotland with the Frenchman’s Gold treasure that was meant to fund the rebellion, and the building of River Run in the New World. She is a woman with a lot of moxie, and while maybe not as modern as Claire in her outlook on life, she is definitely a woman who takes charge of her life. Want to watch Outlander?
